Teaching Your Children to Save

Teaching Your Children to Save is priceless developing their lifestyle when they are grown.
Start with their first piggy bank. Let them begin when they are young. Make it fun and easy to save. Teach them the goal is to fill up the bank. Encourage them to put any change they receive into their bank and not spend it.

Open a savings account for them. Recommend taking a percentage of all gifts and money earned and put into their savings account. A perfect example of compound interest is to show how doubling a penny once every day for 30 days will eventually generate $10 million dollars!piggy-bank-1446874_1920

Create a visual. Draw a thermometer on paper to show how much they are saving, allowing them to see the progress. Another Visual would be using a long strip of paper and a marker. Have $0 on one end and $100 on the other end. Create milestones $5, $25, $50 etc. Depending on their age give our sticker rewards.

A clear jar is another great visual for kids to see results as the jar fills. Have a goal of how much they want to save before they take the money to the bank to put into their savings.

Be a True Example. Show how you are putting money in your savings. It could be that you share with them the envelope system by money guru Dave Ramsey. You break money down into 3 or 4 sections and put them money in each of the envelopes.

Talk to your children about money. They do not teach this in the schools so it is up to the parents to make sure children understand how to save or they will always live paycheck to paycheck.

Asking right questions can get them to think long-term and have a positive relationship with money. Letting your children know you’re always open to have a conversation about money can encourage them to ask questions. It is a tough learning curve.

Focus = Productivity

Focus will influence your productivity.  Have you ever considered all the things in your day the compete for your attention?   You would think with all the technology today we would have more time not less.  You would think with the way technology has allowed us to automate and streamline so many tasks life would be easier.  Yet in many ways it has clogged up our efficiency and because of learning curves it has caused us to lose focus and waste time.

Dog and catWe have been taught you must be good at multi-tasker to be productive.  This is the biggest lie we have been sold in business and life.  Successful men and women have learned that true focus is the KEY to productivity and greater success.

If you think multi-tasking is wise, let me ask you this.  When you are listening to a webinar online and you are looking at your email, text etc.  Can you really tell me what the webinar was about and what did you miss?  Did you respond with a clear mind to the emails correctly?  Did you catch that auto correct on your text?   Exactly!  The term one track mind has been said in a derogatory context but that is what we need to have to be productive.  It is called FOCUSED!

Focus means you should be able to get up each day with a clear idea of how that day should go and if you take each task one at a time and complete that you will have a greater sense of accomplishment.

7 Costly Mistakes Business Owners Make

Ways to avoid the 7 most costly mistakes business owners make:

  1. Costly Business MistakesThe number one mistake business owners make is thinking they can do it all. You must realize we have experts for a reason.   You wouldn’t want a Dentist removing your Gallbladder no more than you would want a Bookkeeper doing your Collections.    They must know logistics and have skills for each of those.   Each are great in their own area of expertise.
  2. Another area that get businesses in trouble with the IRS is mixing personal and business finances. If it is business it should come out of your business account and if it is a personal purchase those funds need to be moved to a personal account and written out.   You cannot mix to two and expect any legal type of protection.
  3. Don’t miss deadlines. Filing the different documents, you need for your industry.   Each industry is different however taxes and filing estimated taxes, payroll taxes and income tax is typically the same.  Don’t miss those deadlines.
  4. Cutting corners. This is a different area to look at using professionals in their industry.    If you need a contract that will hold up in court, you don’t want to necessarily find one on line as that is not written to protect you.     Using an online software to do your taxes when the professionals know what to ask for.  You could be missing more deductions and pay more overall.   Now using refill ink printer cartridges may be wise do your homework before purchasing a used printer.  Cutting corners in NOT the way to go.
  5. Not keeping good records. You may need to hire a bookkeeper or at least a VA to help in this situation.   You want to be sure you are documenting all expenditures.   You are spending the funds just make sure you can prove where and why.
  6. Are you pricing your products or services correctly? It is hard to determine what the market holds and how to price.   Typically keeping in mind clients usually go for the middle pricing you don’t want to be the least expensive not do you want to be the most expensive.   Here is a guide to help with pricing.
  7. Don’t over promise and under deliver.   It would be wiser to under promise and over deliver.   No one minds when you deliver goods or services earlier than ETA but no one like to get something late.  That is the fastest way to ruin you good reputation.   Customer Service is Golden and EXPECTED.

Stop the Rush:  Slow down!  You probably rush around all week trying to give your best all week at work and then try to get your children from one practice to another while trying to a supportive spouse or partner.   Get up a few minutes earlier so you are not rushing and allow time between appointment to have a moment to gather your thoughts.  Take time to smell the roses.

Turn off the Cell Phone:   Try taking an hour each day and disconnect using the phone.  Instead meet family and friends face to face.   Keep the REAL relationships strong.
