Keys to handle difficult situations
Always keep your cool. Always think before you speak. When we are angry our IQ drops dramatically and we say and do things we many times we regret. Many times when you respond when angry it only escalates the situation. If handled correctly it can dissipate the situation. This is where using what we were taught at home or school will help and count to 10 before speaking at all.
Some things just aren’t worth the time or energy. Determine if it is worth the confrontation. Be tactful but be sure it is worth it. Sometimes it is best to just keep a healthy space between you and them until you can calm down.
Respond don’t React
When you have a belligerent person remember to respond not react. Most of the time people just want to be heard. Take a calm motion free approach to listen and respond. Sometimes it is easier to respond peacefully when you put yourself in the other person’s shoes. How would you want to be treated.;
Separate the Emotions
Be the stronger more reasonable problem solver. Remember to remove your emotions from the equation to get a truer feel for the situation. Be careful to keep your emotions in check and not play favorites when helping resolve between two people.
Use the Sandwich Approach
Give a compliment, then sandwich between another compliment exactly what the issue you need to approach is. Be kind. Put yourself in their shoes. No one likes to be criticized.
Humor can help you take the guarded defensive person down. Humor can be extremely powerful was to defuse the situation. We also remember things longer when it has humor included.
